Jennifer Hancock is a Humanist activist. In fact, she worked professionally for a Humanist organization from 2001 until 2007. She joined the Humanist movement back in 1994. So, she has a lot to say on the subject.
Collected here are her writings on the subject of Humanism, religion and morality.
The Intelligent Design Movement is excited, they now have a cool new movie promoting their views. The movie was written by and stars Nixon's former speech wrtier, Ben Stein. Viewing the trailer, which is about all you can do at this point because they don't really want anyone who knows how to think to critique it, the movie makers are totally paranoid. Seriously. Here is my comments on the paranoid trailer for Expelled.
Florida finally has science standards that teach specifically evolution. Yay! It was a tough fight, but worth it. Not surprising, the anti-science crowd came out to fight the inclusion of evolution. Their comments at the many public hearings are proof enough why Florida needed to improve the science standards. That some of these folks graduated from our schools is embarrassing.
Ok – it has happened again – a palm reader has bilked a group of people out of lots of money. Seems like this happens every year or so in our county – you would think people would learn. This time it was the Latino community taking in by a Senora Sara. What surprised me wasn’t that it happened, as I said, it happens every year or so. What actually caught my eye was that the amount stolen was so little, only $25k. And yes, I know that is a lot, but previous takes were in the $50k range. This psychic left town after only taking $25k.
Finally, I have come across a definition of Humanism I actually like. It comes from the Progressive Living Website. The reason I like it is it is the only one I have seen that even mentions compassion. And I happen to think that compassion is the most important aspect of the philosophy. Reason, in my humble opinion is important, but only in service to compassion. Anyway, here is the definition.
In a recent Humanist Network News, there was an article “Humanism and the Trap of Atheism” by Vin Narain a Humanist from India. The basic premise was that Humanists need to talk about Humanism, not about atheism, and boy, was there an uproar. See letters here. I am getting very frustrated by this debate. First, it seems like the atheists feel that if anyone in the freethought movement wants to talk about anything other then atheism, it is perceived as a direct attack on atheism. It isn’t. There are just other things worthy of discussion.
