Politics
Essays, commentaries, suggestions, on issues affecting Americans and what just plain annoys me. My grandfather Shaw wrote a political column for a paper back in IL, so I guess this runs in the family.
Politics do matter. To everyone. If we want to live in a compassionate and just society, we need to elect politicians that will represent the people and not special interests. Pay attention to what they do, not what they say.

Still Lying about
Tillman
8/2/07
They are still lying about Pat Tillman. And this
time, it is the mainstream news media that still doesn’t have the story right. Even though it has been firmly established that Pat Tillman was
killed by his fellow soldiers, and the real debate is whether he was intentionally murdered or was shot accidentally, CNN still ran a crawl last night that
said Pat might possibly have been killed by friendly fire! Write Comment (0 comments) |

An Exit
Strategy
7/13/07
I am upset about what is happening in Iraq and our apparently open-ended commitment there. But I worry that
with all the talk of withdrawal, there isn’t actually a good plan to withdrawal. Further, this administration is amazingly incompetent.
Do we really want them managing a withdrawal? As much as I want the troops out, I am not sure I want Bush et al organizing it for us. Write Comment (0 comments) |

Disbar Gonzo
6/20/07
So, I have been wondering. With Gonzales clearly at the center of some major law breaking by the Bush White House, and as it now also appears, to be at the center of the cover up of the lawbreaking, what is it going to take for this guy to be debarred? Certainly if he was disbarred, wouldn’t that mean he couldn’t be the US Attorney General anymore? Write Comment (0 comments) |

Hypothetical Pardons
6/19/07
There is clearly a movement on the right to have Bush pardon Libby. And, I have been wondering, why on earth would the laity of the right even care about Libby. And after thinking on this a bit, I think I may have come up with a reasonable hypothesis on why this groundswell is taking place. Write Comment (0 comments) |

Experts on the Environment?
6/4/07
Recently, several religious leaders testified before congress
on environmental legislation. Yes, you heard me right, religious leaders testified before congress on the subject of environmental
legislation. (see story in Baptist
Press) What I am left wondering is why congress would even bother considering religious leaders as being
experts on the environment or on economic impact of the environment. I doubt any of them have studied environmental science or
economics as a profession. So, really, what insight could they possibly have that would warrant asking them to testify as to the
benefits or drawbacks on any particular piece of environmental legislation? Write Comment (0 comments) |

Extra Time for Illegal Aliens?
4/8/07
Recently, my neighbor's kid was kidnapped. He escaped as he is a) a very talented young man who kept his head about him and b) he was kidnapped for ransom and not for other reasons which every parent dreads. Our congressperson (whose seat is still being contested because of 18,000 votes that might have gone missing), has decided to use this tragedy to prove he is tough on crime (a requirement for republican politicians who want to be re-elected by their base). The Latest Scandal
March 29
2007 Ok - is it just me? Or have there been way too many scandals with this administration. They just can’t help themselves. They have done
so many immoral things and they are habitual liars, it was just a matter of time until these things started to pile up. (See incomplete list at: http://www.sourcewatch.org/index.php?title=Bush_administration_scandals
