5 Things
7/1/09
Some weird statements have come up in the press and even by the President lately and they need some rebutting, because, lets face it, some of these things are just plain stupid. And, then there are things that I just feel the need to weigh in on. Enjoy.
- If it is a coup – it is illegal. There is no need to say it was an illegal coup. By definition, a coup is illegal, unless you are in Turkey and the army is overthrowing a theocratic government, which the army there has a moral responsibility to do as they consider themselves to be the protectors of secularism in Turkey. All other coups everywhere else are illegal. That doesn’t mean they can’t be morally justified. It just means they are illegal.
- Mark Sanford’s political career won’t be ok if he gets back together with his wife as many in the GOP claim. His marital issues are interesting in a voyeuristic way, but his infidelity has very little to do with why he isn’t fit to lead. He isn’t fit to lead because when he is under stress, he apparently freaks out. We want leaders who remain calm and think and act rationally when under pressure. He doesn’t. And that is what really matters.
- Asking gays to wait for equal protection under the law is not acceptable. Obama should suspend enforcement of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell now. Anything else is unacceptable, offensive and harmful to the defense of our nation.
- Michael Jackson’s kids – who he apparently never really had legally adopted - should not be placed in the same home as Joe Jackson (Michael’s dad). The reason for this is that Joe has admitted to being abusive to Michael and his other children. And he should not be allowed access to Michael’s kids. After all, they have already had the trauma of living with a dad with a known drug habit, who clearly had mental health issues and who just died. Placing them with a known child abuser should not be considered. Unfortunately, Michael apparently made his mom (who is still married to Joe), the guardian of his children. So… unless the real parents of these children step forward, they will be moving from one bad situation to a potentially worse one. I find that horrifying.
- To everyone who doesn’t like the new show Merlin. Get a life and learn to suspend your disbelief. It is fiction. The Arthurian legend is fiction. If a writer wants to explore the characters of the story in a new way, let them. No harm done. All the other versions of the Arthur stories are still available for your consumption. My husband and I have decided we really like this show. The characters are nice. The way the stories unfold is nice. The interracial harmony that has never existed in reality is nice. Everything about it is nice. Even the dragon is funny. So… just allow it to be what it is and stop trying to make everything fit your predetermined ideas of how the Arthur story should be told. You are probably the same folk who didn’t give Enterprise a chance and shame on your as that was a great series too. Again – learn to suspend your disbelief and allow these shows to be what they are.
