How can we get our neighbors to think about the true meaning of Christmas?
Dec 23, 2004
Question:
Our neighbors really get into Christmas in a big way – lots of decorating, parties, expensive gifts and so forth. But to them it’s just a time to have family fun, with no religious meaning. How can we get them thinking about the real meaning of Christmas?
Billy Graham’s answer:
One of the best ways to do this is to let them see what Christmas means to you and your family. And one of the best ways to do that is to include them in some special event with your family during this season of the year. … Even if they are unable to go, they will sense your concern for them and realize that Christmas has a special meaning for you. The most important thing you can do, however, is to pray for your neighbors. Pray that they will begin to see the emptiness of their lives and realize they need the meaning and purpose only Christ can give.
Jen’s response:
Wow, how condescending can you get. If you don’t celebrate Christmas exactly like other people, your life must be empty. First off, it is quite possible that they do indeed understand the real meaning of Christmas (which in this context is the specific meaning the questioner attaches to this holiday). But, even if they don’t, they obviously attach some meaning to the holiday; otherwise, they would not go to all the trouble of decorating and hosting parties, and enjoying this special time with their families.
I do think that Billy is right about inviting them to participate in one of your special celebrations. Sharing holiday traditions is a great way to learn about what is important to the people around you. But before you get into thinking that they lead empty lives that only you can help them fill by leading them to Christ, you might want to open yourself up the possibility that your neighbors do indeed attach special significance to the holiday and in addition to the religious meaning, also take the time to reach out to their friends, family and neighbors in a spirit of love and understanding. Rather then judging them as lacking, you might just find out that they are living wonderfully full lives with the love and support of friends, family and their faith.
