Humanist Thought of the Week: 9 2 2008
Did you know that at least 43% of the world’s chocolate is farmed using child slave labor?
I didn’t until just a few weeks ago.
I can’t stomach the thought of eating chocolate now.
I can’t eat something that has the literal blood of an 11-year-old child in it.
While not all chocolate is farmed using child slaves without access to their parents, health care or adequate food, it is almost impossible to know where the chocolate you are eating came from.
Chocolate manufacturers mix their chocolate from a variety of sources, which is how they are able to sell slave made food in America.
This can change if we all demand that they label their products with country of origin.
Slave free chocolate is more expensive, but chocolate is a luxury item anyway.
