Humanist Thought of the Week: 9 7 2010
Magical vs. Practical thinking
When it comes to solving our problems, Humanists rely on practical thinking.
Sure, we understand the attraction of magical thinking.
Who wouldn’t want to wave a wand and have your problems magically go away?
But we know the world doesn’t work that way.
If something is going to get done, someone is going to need to do it and that someone may as well be us.
But practical thinking isn’t just superior to magical thinking because it gets us off our tuckuses and gets us moving.
It is also superior because it is based in reality.
And when your problems are based in reality, reality based practical solutions are usually the best way to solve them.
Plus, consulting with your shaman isn’t going to help you pay the rent.
It’s as simple as that.
