Liar Pants on Fire

Sumogirl’s Humanist Thought of the Week: Aug 14 2007

A question often posed to non-believers is:

“why be good?

There are many good secular reasons why to behave decently.

Reward or

punishment after death need not enter into it.

Take lying for instance.

The obvious reason why you

shouldn’t lie is because it is disrespectful.

The other main reason not to lie is because of its personal

consequences

Liars know they can’t be trusted and they assume everyone else can’t be trusted either.

What a sad and lonely existence that must be.
