Humanist Thought of the Week: Feb 26 2008
It is impossible to avoid them, as they seem to be everywhere.
Obnoxious people can challenge the beliefs of even the most compassionate Humanist.
When I am faced with an obnoxious person, I go out of my way to be truly nice to them and to the people they are being rude to.
If they are just having a bad day, this show of pleasantness is often just the reminder they need to be nice.
If they are truly obnoxious, being nice will actually annoy them.
I always enjoy annoying obnoxious people.
You will find that your compassion and humor in the face of obnoxious behavior is contagious.
There is nothing like the positive feeling of solidarity you get when a group of strangers unites to keep an obnoxious person from ruining your day.
Try it, you might just like it.
